What to Bring to Your Skippers Course
A practical checklist covering everything you should have with you on the day of your skippers course in South Africa.
Quick Checklist
Documents — What You Need and Why
South African ID / Smart ID Card / Passport
This is essential. Your identity needs to be verified for the application process. If you're a foreign national, bring your passport. Make sure your ID is valid.
ID Copies
Bring at least two clear photocopies of your ID. Some providers can assist with this on the day, but having copies ready saves time.
Passport-Size Photographs
You'll typically need 2 to 4 recent passport-size photos. These are used for your application to the authority. Don't use old photos — they should be recent and clearly show your current appearance. Most pharmacies and printing shops can do these inexpensively.
Proof of Booking or Payment
Bring your booking confirmation email or receipt. This confirms your place and avoids any admin confusion on the day.
Pre-Completed Application Forms
If your course provider emailed you forms to complete in advance, bring these filled in and ready. Completing them beforehand saves valuable course time.
For the Practical Component
If your practical assessment involves time on or near the water:
- Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather
- Bring sunscreen — especially in summer or for full-day sessions
- Bring water to stay hydrated
- Closed-toe footwear is recommended near vessels and docks
- A light jacket or windbreaker for early morning or cool days
Study Materials
If your provider supplied a study pack or reference booklet in advance, bring it to the course. Some instructors refer to it during the theory session and it may be useful during any revision time before the exam.
Confirm With Your Provider
Requirements can vary slightly between providers. Always confirm the exact documents required when you receive your booking confirmation. If in doubt, bring more rather than less.
